World of Warcraft

Before World of Warcraft the MMO genre was something of a magic, the guiding principal had always been the desire to let people live in an alternate reality with alternate lives, an escape for a time from these circumstances and these rules. What befell the genre in the dawn of WoWs success was something else entirely, the free form laws of social order were discarded and developer defined hierarchies and practices became the norm. With this loss of self determination the overly dedicated player base quickly forgot such rudimentary things as remembering who their friends were, what they were supposed to be doing today and had they showered in the last three days? Headless and entirely unable to fix their own lives the player base became enamored with the tick tick tick of their xp and progress bars, the only shining light in their underground abodes. Such was it worshiped that they trekked for weeks and months through content deserts simply to have the value stored in their characters level trait changed from 59 to 60. This became the only symbol of self worth by which any player in the game could define themselves because anything not told to them by a developer or the game itself meant nothing. For in the mind of a NEET what is the use of such things as feeling rewarded for having learned a lesson and doing something for the sake of the experience? Carrot and Stick game design created such a successful commercial product that the entire genre was forever lost except in cases of extreme brain abnormality (RuneScape) and extreme commerce (EVE Online).

With it’s world class art teams Blizzard discovered that aesthetic was not only best for marketing but best for player retention because the degrees of separation between Coomers and NEET’s are as few as the minutes they spend outside each day. Just as the game world is an illusion that the Gamer is willing to exist within so to are the waifus that the developers all too happily populate it with. If the xp isn’t hitting well enough today there’s always a little time off at the Goldshire Inn to ease those carpal tunneled wrists. With all psychological needs technically cared for the player base would thereby do everything in it’s power to secure the monthly subscription fee from their parents. In World of Warcraft a complete life only costs $15 a month, a heck of a deal considered that funding for a round trip to any where to do anything in life easily costs as much.

WoW was truly life’s most complete replacement for life, not merely an extension of the business sector like EVE Online or bring your autist to work day like RuneScape but a place for you to forget the need to become or join or enjoy or grow. A club for NEET Coomers to be themselves with other NEET Coomers as long as one of the two is logged into their nude Draenei alt.
